You Gotta Know When to Fold 'Em

To say that last week was a crazy one here would be an understatement.  Between work, knitting deadlines, and a baby that still thinks it impossible to sleep longer than 45 minutes at a time, by the end of the week I was tired.

But there is no rest for the knitter, for on Saturday was  a baby shower.  Many of you know the feeling.  You're the crafty type and everybody knows it.  Handmade gifts are expected- it's your duty. So Friday after work I came home and got right to work.

I knit feverishly until we left for an evening party.

One mitten complete.

I cast on for a matching hat late at night when we returned home.

I stayed up late, I woke up early.

Maybe it was sleep that cleared my mind, because when I woke to this at 6am, I wasn't satisfied.

I went to bed thinking, "I'll finish the hat and then work on the second mitten at the shower".  I could've done it.  Even though the shower was in the morning, I still had a few hours to finish the hat, get ready, and tend to a baby. It was possible.

But by 7am I started to see things more clearly.  What was with this color scheme I chose?  I felt something was off in the mitten so I decided to make cream the main color of the hat. Major fail. All of a sudden I was reminded of a certain Ken doll from my childhood. You know, the one with the light grey tuxedo and pink bowtie.  I panicked.

Solution?  Aviatrix!

I turned my size 1.5 needles in for size 6, my fingering weight wool in for dk, and in just over an hour I had a gift.

I made this hat for Elise when she was about a week old, so I remembered how fast it is. After a few weeks of knitting on nothing larger than size 2 needles, this seemed more fun than before. Instant Gratification?  Yes, please!

TOMS Giveaway

I've been meaning to post about this all week, but here I am... informing my readers about it on the last day of the giveaway.  Oh well, better late than never, right?

My little sister just started a blog.  It's a mix of freebies, deals, and how to get a good bargain.  But, it doesn't just stop there.  Laura also encorporates the idea of using these free/cheap "blessings" to bless others in return.  As a blessing to her readers (and to a child in need), Laura will be giving away a pair of TOMS shoes from a deal she found on the internet.

You can find her blog (and more info about her blog purpose) by clicking on her button in my left sidebar.  Or, you can go straight to the giveaway here.  Good luck!

Elegant Economy Designs- Introduction and Giveaway!

What a pleasure it is to once again introduce you to a new sponsor.  Maria contacted me a while ago to let me know that she was interested in sponsoring FPK in order to share the word about her new design line.

The time has come, Maria's designs are up on Ravelry, and I get the pleasure of introducing and sharing Elegant Economy Designs with you!

Maria's tale is a bit of a fairytale (well, to me at least!).  Although she has been a knitter most of her life, Maria has recently decided to try her hand at designing.  For her, it is the perfect combination of math, creativity, and art.  After designing some prototypes, Maria set out with a goal: build her design portfolio.

How would she start?  With four patterns and a due date of April 2011.

How would she accomplish this goal?  Maria decided to quit her day job to pursue her dream of knitwear design as a full-time endeavor.

Outcome? Unique and gorgeous handknits.  Just have a look at her 4 premier designs:

Stunning!

Now for the exciting part:  Elegant Economy Designs will be giving away a download of the entire collection to one reader.  What must you do to enter?  Just leave a comment here with a message to Maria.  Say hi, give her a word of encouragement as she jumps into this new career, or let her know what design you like best- the sky's the limit!  Let's show our support to a newbie in the industry.

After you leave a comment here, pop on over to Elegant Economy Designs website where you can read more about Maria's design process and get to know the face behind the knits.

The contest will be open until Thursday, April 14 2011 11:59 PM EST.  I will then choose a winner at random that will be announced on Friday.   Only one comment per person, please.
